Neurosis Is a Substitute for Legitimate Suffering
Jung: Neurosis is the very intelligent effort to not have to feel pain. It's like if an alcoholic takes a drink to get out of disturbing feelings, they're going to actually get some immediate relief. If we distract ourselves with TV, we don't have to think about our difficult life for the moment. So neurosis works in the short run by providing distraction,. A type of anesthesia, an ability to not be aware of our actual experience.
