The Noise of the Insects
As a group, cicadas are the loudest insects on the planet. Some can buzz up to 120 decibels which is like a jackhammer going off next to your window. Mating calls are important, but they aren't the only sounds the insects make and these other noises tend to be less well understood. A good example are best beetles, if you pick them up they'll squeak. And we think it's some sort of communication, but we don't know exactly what they're communicating.
