The Evolution of the Eye
When I was working on flies eyes, I started to get in touch with the genes that made the opsin proteins. It turns out they're the same basic kind of protein that we have. They probably evolved from an ancient opsin gene and at the same time, there were mutants in flies that were eyeless. Some of them coded for transcription factors, particularly one called Pac-6 which is known in humans to cause eye defects. You can trace this back as Walter Gering did practically all the way to bacteria when Pac-6 first evolved.
