Why Is There So Many People on Twitter?
The idea that you'd be on Twitter, but just in perpetual arguments about what it represents, rather than actually using it to convey and receive information, I think starts to feel like a job. There are enough angry, petulant, tickless children in the life of most academic scientists that they don't need another one policing their late reading. We're now in this awkward transitional zone. The general rule is that there are 10 times as many people reading as there are participating or creating. That quickly cuts the guts out of a place. It's been hugely accelerated by the fact that the kind of stochastic emergence of Twitter is a default platform.
