A recent study on increased oxygen uptake in runners when they were doing high intensity intervals uphill versus on flat ground or flat treadmill. If you can do the same workout running uphill as running on flat ground, then you can potentially have a higher time near VO2 Max. This Monday, I interview Paul Newsom, who is a triathlon swim coach.
