Professor Swinburne: If we uncovered that the mental life of animals was quite analogous to humans in terms of the amount of suffering they were experiencing, it would worry me. And do you think that's a question that will ultimately be answered by science or by philosophy? I don't think it will ever be answered, frankly, because animals don't talk. They haven't got the sophistication anyway, even if they did have. How can they explain what it feels like to be a me? It's hard enough to understand what it feelslike to be you and let alone them.
