Lactate actually stimulates these neurons in a brain region called the locus chorolius which is where all the nore epinephrine neurons are. Lactate permeates through the brain when it's high and goes into areas that regulate appetite. Black tape specifically has been shown to stimulate BDNF which is quite interesting because it isn't just an energy source but also a signaling molecule as well.
