Deliberate Practice: The Secret Sauce of Education
The idea of being able to perform a task and get immediate feedback about how to change some sequence or step, that's deliberate practice. As practicing emergency physicians we are not doing this practice or deliberate practice in some cases we're not doing it at all. The thing that's glaring here for me is that we do plenty of this for our trainees but what about for the staff emergency physicians? I mean I can't even remember the last time that I've had specific feedback on something that I've just done in terms of learning a procedural skill. So ideally my wish is that we figure out how to actually be doing this deliberate practice and not just individually but we're talking about in a team
