The Role of Non-Rem Sleep in Memory

People can have quite distorted proportions of sleep and still function well. REM sleep's more involved in consolidating motor memory than N3, which is about distilling the wisdom of our experiences. For example, someone with PTSD doesn't sleep well after a traumatic experience because they don't get that deep asleep. What they keep is the movie like replay of the traumatic event. And that's what sticks with them.
