The Importance of Listening
I love the word emergence to talk about writing and some of my most amazing teachers, I think have taught me that even though it's not in the guise of Buddhism. So I had one teacher, Maria Irene Fornes, who she would always say, you know, don't treat your characters like little puppets. Don't tell them what to do. Let them speak,. which is the form of emergence and a form of listening really. And we can feel trapped when we're writing if we think it all has to come out of us as opposed to listening to what is emerging from us.
