Self Absorption in Depression and Suicide
One view of suicide and depression is that individuals over long periods of time experience despair and lose hope for the future. But there's another view which I was first suggested by Emile Durkheim: Individuals become extremely depressed and suicidal due to self fixation as well as withdrawal from the social world. So if this theory is correct, poets would use who committed suicide would use more first person pronouns and references to themselves in their poetry. The analysis of the poems provided notable support that depression and suicide are associated with self fixation,. but they found absolutely no support for the hopelessness theory.
