How to Explain a Regression to the Mean
Whenever the correlation between two scores is imperfect, there will be a regression to the mean. Our mind is strongly biased toward causal explanations and does not deal well with mere statistics. We pay people quite well to provide interesting explanations of regression effects. Causal explanations will be evoked when regression is detected, but they will be wrong.
