HoP 068 - John Sellars on the Roman Stoics
History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps
The Reception of Stoicism in the Early Modern Period
The reception of stoicism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. A shift from reading our roman stoic authors to trying to reconstruct the details of the early stoic system. And i guess its may be worth noting here that it's not only the stoics, but all three of the main helenistic schools who were influential during this period. The sceptics are a huge influence on montaigne,. descartes and hume. An scepticism in a sense shapes the development of early philosophy as it will be the next topic for John Defterios' podcasts.
