We really should be thinking about any process that influences red blood cell lifespan. You have on average slightly older red blood cells in circulation for a long time. And even if you have high glucose, because that molecule of hemoglobin has not been around very long, your A1c is not going to be super high. So you get false reassurance in those situations.
