In 1922, masala chai was not a tradition. It really didn't get created until sometime between 1918 and 1930. And it didn't make its way to Moti Ben's home in Shukla Teerith, Gujarat until the 1940s. "It's a relatively new invention, which surprises a lot of people," she says.
