Herbert Hoover and the Food System

World War I breaks out in 1914, the US joins 1917. When they join they form a government department led by private citizen Herbert Hoover. He got restaurants to save more than 300 million pounds of meat by adopting meatless Monday programs. They used the US mail to send postcards to families and got about 10 million households to sign off saying that they promised to use less wheat, fat and sugar.
