The Hotwired pioneers had very little in the way of templates or examples to draw from for inspiration because there literally weren't many other web publications out there at that point. Joe McCambly was a creative executive at an agency called Modem Media, one of his big clients was AT&T. "What made the brainstorming hard is that we didn't really know anything," he says.
