If you're going to look at us from an ancestral or evolutionary perspective, human being sleep at night. So do all diurnal mammals. We need this. What happens when we sleep? When I was in medical school, the concept of the glymphatic system hadn't even been discovered. Especially when we sleep, our brain cells are washed with fluid and toxins are cleansed from the cerebral spinal fluid. There's really long term effects that we know are linked to sleep deprivation and sleep cycle disruption.
