The Vagus Nerve and Childhood Trauma
In a state of childhood trauma, when a child is being severely neglected or abused, a third layer of defense structure kicks in through the vagus nerve. The part of us that learned to move ourselves through the world is somehow associated with an experience of threat. When we have had experiences of either being stuck in fight flight or stuck in high arousal and feeling anxious and not able to sleep, our mobilization system is actually being inhibited by that energy. In yoga, we learn to move the body and we learn to rest in both healthy ways.
