Most economists agree that the benefits of tariffs and trade barriers are greatly outweighed by the cost of them. Most tariffs have either gone away completely or gone way down. Back in the 1960s, for example, the average tariff on the stuff we imported was around 7%. Today, it's one and a half percent.
