Is There Anything to the Idea of Surprising Your Muscles?

i'm doing a lot of the same exercises and just adding weight each time. It's for the first time in i've tried, i've lifting weights and doing cross fit before. And this has just felt more like meditative and relaxing. Is there anything to that idea of trying to surprise your muscles? I think exercise physiologists do think of interval training in a cross training is important - mostly in terms of recovery.
