How Do You Show Empathy With Your Wife?

I was raised under tough love and as an adult I have three elementary kids of my own. My wife struggles with high anxiety and shuts down when faced with adversity. How do you show empathy? It's obvious what it looks like But how do you ingrain it into a relationship with say your wife?
