Ask something a few more times in order to get to the actual reason. You can't really do that via a survey. No way you can ask like three additional questions using survey data, that's just impossible to uncover. The last thing for you, day is about awkward silences. Lots of researchers, when there is an awkward silence, they get nervous and they feel in the void. So never do that, just never feel the void. Just embrace the awkward silences because in lots of cases, what comes after an awkward silence is useful.
