The Importance of Protein in Muscle Mass Gain
If you were trying to predict the amount of muscle mass being gained, I would feel very confident in saying you're likely to gain more muscle mass if you're at maintenance or in a slight surplus. The downside of that is that people are like, Oh, it's just bulking season. Well, you also gain more fat mass. And so that may not be a trade off that you want as far as the amount of fat mass related to muscle mass that you gain. That ties into the variability we described with those overfeeding studies where you fed everybody the same surplus and you saw this huge range and differences of how much fat and lean mass people gained despite the same surplus.
