We tend to take in information if it comes in and it reinforces what we want to believe. We very quickly accept it to be true. If we get information we don't want to believe, we are much more skeptical. A great example of selective skepticism is this website that I really like. It's called literallyunbelievable.org. They collect Facebook comments of people who believe that the articles in the onion are real. And so of course, nothing in it is real.
