Phrenology and the History of Race-Based Science
Andrew Jackson used phrenology to justify the removal of Native Americans. He said they were getting in the way of forward progress of the United States. Phrenology provided an ideological justification for what was happening which I do think is important. Morton's book crania Americana is regarded as undoubtedly the most important work in the history of scientific racism with its detailed illustrations and scientific appearance. Charles Darwin considered Morton an Authority on the subject of race later in the 19th century other European scholars produced imitations with titles including crania Britannica and crania Germanica.
