I would always encourage people to make use of any machine that's available, rather than cables as a first kind of choice. I think people overestimate how much they're getting from cable exercises compared to machines. If somebody's got a nice lateral, a raised machine in the gym, I would always include that if possible. The stability is just so much more valuable.
