Prussian king Frederick the Great was facing a real risk of famine in Prussia. He decided to cultivate the potato, a brand new food at the time brought over from South America by Spanish explorers. The potato was easy to grow and promised to be a vital new food source. But there was a problem: peasants didn't want to touch the potato because it was flavourless. According to Professor Robert Chaldini, Frederick used a classic marketing trick to overcome this problem. It wasn't long before potatoes became widely cultivated and are now firmly established in the Austrian and German diet.
