This chapter discusses the strategy behind implementing remedies for improving democracy, including deliberative polling, citizen assemblies, online deliberations, and bi-representational systems. It explores successful examples from around the world and highlights the challenges faced in promoting these approaches. It also discusses the concept of permanent citizens assemblies as a counterweight to the electoral process.
David Van Reybrouck's book, Against Elections, helped crystalize a movement for citizen assemblies. In my conversation with him, we talk about the origin of this idea, and how it could complement democracy.
