People who have particularly interesting things to say tend to be masters of more than one discipline that very rarely overlap. I think what happens is that you develop these pockets of expertise, you bring them together. And the effects of that are multiplicative rather than additive. That can really spiral you up the competence ladder towards higher and higher levels of success. If you have a society that opens up the possibility for people to do that, then the society also tends to thrive.
