If we assume that our employees are going to violate a sick policy, well, eventually you're going to attract the sort of people. The idea of sick days, it's not vacation. If you're sick and sick 15 times in the year, they shouldn't have to pay for that. But what happens is if you have rules and policies rather than principle and culture, then you develop a culture around those rules and policies. And so it does actually create a culture. It's just not the one that you are hoping that actually reinforce the spirit of it.
Too many organizations allow their culture to be affected by their policies, while their policies should instead be informed by their culture. This week, Pat, Cody and Beau discuss the dangers of letting our policies send the wrong message to our employees and customers.
