The foil on wine has no purpose these days either, but they leave it on. It used to be to stop cork weevils from going in and borrowing into the cork. In fact, the cork is a very poor stopper. Who wants to buy a $300 bottle of champagne and have a screw top? You know, it just feels chintzy or who wants to get a $50 bottle and have foil that just doesn't feel like real foil, it feels like plastic?"
