strength training a long, long way away from musculi the failure so far away, it doesn't cause any hypertrophy at all. Endurance running even on the flat creates a satellite cell response. Whether satellite cells get activated and start going through their cycles or not is completely unrelated to whether we actually end up creating hypertrophy. The signal from the kind of mechanical tension that then tells them I'm able to do its thing is the kind of critical event.
