Dartmouth political science professor Brendan Nihan and his colleagues found that the backfire effect failed to replicate their study. The researchers were so exhilarated, they offered to help them run additional studies on the subject. In one of those studies, deep into the 2016 presidential campaign, scientists measured people's attitudes toward Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. They then asked people who had positive attitudes towards Trump and negative attitudes toward Clinton to read two incorrect statements made by Trump on the campaign trail. After reading the corrections, subjects changed their beliefs about both candidates.
