I think one of the big tensions in this book is that our reaction to the work of art is necessarily so personal and can't really be dictated by anyone. One of the ideas you narrow in on is this sense that it's not really fair that this sense of responsibility has ended up on our heads as individual consumers. In the system of capital, we are consumers You know, we might produce, we might have different roles but at heart what our role is our job is to consume - a very disempowered narrow gig that we have.
