Migrating birds need to have a three dimensional map, because they're not flying flat. So one possibility for navigation is that animals have something like google maps in their heads. And maybe on a long journey like the bartel godwit from, which flies from alaska to new zealand every year and then back again, it needs to know w where the restaurants are on on route.
