You can pay for a one month pro subscription to LinkedIn and that allows you to search previous employees of an organization. And even if you are not an academia, that's a little bit easier in academia just because CVs,. all this sort of thing. You can tell a lot just by the way whoever it is answers the question. If they get visibly uncomfortable, if they don't really have an answer, if like you can tell a whole lot just by their response.
