The First Time You Race a New Distance

The first time you race a new distance, your ultimate goal is just to become acquainted with the distance. I like to say it's about getting acquainted with thedistance because racing is a skill and different distances require a slightly different skill set. Every time you step up to a start line and you're trying to do something you've never done before, there is going to be an element of doubt. That's normal and even elite runners do this as well.
