This chapter discusses the strategy used by Ethelfled and her brother in retaking territories from the Danes in Anglo-Saxon England. They fortify towns to make it difficult for Viking raiders to retake them, successfully reconquering the territory over a decade. The chapter also highlights the rare occurrence of women leading military forces during the early medieval period.
