The Expanding Circle
Sociopaths get a bad rap, but sociopaths are over-represented in prisons. I think about this as sort of W.E.H. Lecky's concept of the expanding circle. He said that your circle of moral consideration begins really small with your family and then your tribe. And it's kind of expanded more and more till it can even include all of humanity. Peter Singer argued it will one day include animals as well.
He gave up a staggeringly successful career to live a quiet life -- and now he shares his wisdom with us.
