The Virtue of Keeping to the Notebooks
Kafka's diaries were not organized and linear. The virtue of keeping to the notebooks is, well, any chronology you imposed would have to make some decisions that were potentially artificial. Sometimes there's actually something interesting in the textual proximity where he'll open an earlier notebook and kind of respond to an entry from years ago. But then there's also just the sense of what was left behind when Kafka died.
