What's the Difference Between TCP and UDP?
TCP is probably your only reasonable option over something like the internet. But once you started moving towards co-location and more private networks, it became a lot more feasible to start using different forms of networking. UDP is a much lighter layer on top of the underlying raw transport,. still unreliable, but with a little bit of routing information.
