The Controversial Side of DKA Management
The treatment of acidosis in DKA with sodium bicarb. Why is this so controversial? And let us know what's the possible harm I guess in these patients of giving it. Yes, we reviewed our Mopilov 2009 guidelines. They actually don't recommend giving bicarb until the pH drops low to 6.9. So there's some theoretical risk of worsening your ketosis and it's also never shown to improve outcome. But if you are just giving it just to correct the pH that may not be the correct thing to do.
