During the business depression of 18 94, operators pretty much everywhere started cutting the pay of their miners without warning or negotiation. The coal fields of southern west virginia were some of the last ones to be built up. They were worked by locals or recently arrived central and southern europeans and southern blacks who had no union experience whatever. And so as all those mines up in the midwest and the northern areas shut down, the ones in south west virginia kept going.
