The Limiter of Long Distance Training Is Aerobic Threshold Training
As a long distance to athlete you should also put a big big emphasis on improving your aerobic threshold or LT1 which is usually at around the top end of your zone 2. For Ironman racing in particular it would be even more important to raise your aerobic threshold as a percentage of VO2 max rather than the anaerobic threshold so I would suggest doing a lot of LT1 training. The higher intensity especially when you're training at a high volume become very costly and you just find it difficult to recover well enough, he says.
