The Paradox of Stimulants

The word stimulant, I mean, it sounds almost opposite of what we want to do. Do we actually want to stimulate the brain here because these kids are hyperactive and seem overstimulated already? What's the deal there? I mean, how do stimulants actually work? And why are they called that?
