The most robust driver of believing that your work is important has been shown over and over again since the 1970s. I often think about when people lack meaning in their job, the question that I encourage them to ask is: Who would be worse off if your job didn't exist? Those are the people who explain why your job exists. And then, you know, there's some very cool research by Jessica Rodell, which shows that volunteering can be a substitute.
