William herschel looked at nebulous, cloudy, fuzzy objects. He called them nebulae because he thought they were clouds of er, clouds of dust, clouds of stars. The telescopes of the time weren't sufficiently good to actually distinguish individual stars and to see that these were galaxies. Herschel started using a reflecting telescopeer ofe, which had mirrors in rather than lenses.
