Sir M. Visweshwaraya brought an automobile industry project to India in 1935. Walchia Ndhe Hirajand, the famous industrialist from Bombay, was ready to bankroll the project. Hindustan Motors set up in 1942 under the management of Bela Brothers and Premier Automobiles were set up in 1944. The progress of these two companies was slow in the initial stages due to intense competition from both old and new producers,. who were essentially assemblers.
