The Importance of Understanding the World of the Literary
As far as the liberal fields of study, I have some fondness for new historicism. Lewis believed that you had to understand the world of the literary artifact. Pin Warren and those guys try to present it as a very sophisticated way of looking at literature. But if you're just thinking, it's like you're hearing from a god with a small G every time you read Shakespeare or Homer. It's a form of idolaty, what it is.
